We had an in-depth conversation with the North Macedonian artist duo Yane Calovski & Hristina Ivanoska on their work for the exhibition No Feeling Is Final. The Skopje Solidarity Collection. For their installation All Things Flowing they picked seemingly contrasting works from the collection of MoCA Skopje by two very influential North Macedonian artists – Aneta Svetieva and Dushan Perchinkov. They reacted to this choice with two new works of their own to explore the local art history and to reimagine the story of MoCA Skopje in an essayistic way.

Eva Egermann – Ein Versuch über Linda Bilda [An Approach to Linda Bilda]

In this experimental audio piece Eva Egermann explores scenes from Linda Bilda’s comic worlds. Which questions do they pose concerning the social conditions of artistic work and socio-political agency? It is a close reading and discussion of Linda Bilda’s texts and images as visual thinking spaces, which are characterized by autonomy, fearlessness, non-conformity, and idiosyncrasy. And last but not least: a piece of fan fiction.

The audio piece is part of the group exhibition In the meantime, midday comes around.

Cho Beom-Seok: Prägung [Imprint]

In Cho Beom-Seok‘s documentary Prägung [Imprint], we meet a blind protagonist who tries to transform the small balcony of his apartment into a “paradise”. Through the dialogues and intimate and associative sound compositions, the viewer is introduced to a world that reveals more about human existence than it seems at first glance.

For this podcast on the cinematic work, currently on view in the exhibition Handspells, the artist dares to experiment with omitting the images of the film in order to reduce our experience to the auditory: we are following the audio description for the blind and visually impaired. Sounds, dialogues and music form a sonic space that allows a singular intimacy and closeness that seems only accessible through this path.

Želimir Žilnik born 1942, lives and works in Novi Sad, Serbia. He has written and directed numerous feature and documentary films. Artistically his works fluctuate between documentary and fictional storytelling. From the very beginning he focused on contemporary issues, featuring social, political, and economic assessments of everyday life. The exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien titled Shadow Citizens opens up several thematic channels into the vast body of Zilnik’s work and tries to illuminate the cultural roots these extraordinary films stem from. We had the chance to interview Želimir Žilnik last November.
