The Study Sessions will be held in English, and you are welcome to join in at any time.
This practice-based seminar is situated in the Master in Critical Studies program at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, but open to all who are interested. Together we explore the theme of extractivism and various artistic approaches to it.
This Open Study Session is organized by the students Iris Omari Ansong, Elena Blum and Sarah Rogner. Under the title Coltan, Congo, Genocide, the topic of extractivism will be explored in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The focus is on the mining of coltan, cobalt and copper, and “conflict-free sourcing” is called into question. Artistic practices and resistance against neocolonial structures will also be discussed.
The seminar is anti-hierarchically structured. In Open Study Sessions we will not only deal with the content, but also with the way how we gather and discuss the topic.
At the end of January, students will present a larger Open Study Session, first at the Academy of Fine Arts and then at Kunsthalle Wien.
