What can we learn from a historical view of solidarity? The educational, counselling and therapy center Peregrina was founded in 1984 as one of the first migrant organizations in Vienna, as an “association of solidary women from Turkey and Austria”; the collective MUSMIG calls for a museum of migration as a “thorn in the flesh” of nation-state institutions; and the archive project Viena Chilena 73 | 23 collects Chilean stories of exile and migration in memory of anti-fascist struggles and individual migration biographies. What unites all these initiatives is that they are inscribed in solidarity movements, refer to them or were active in shaping their history(ies).
Our workshop on December 5 offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in these stories in the form of a World Café, to look at archival material, to listen, and to create references on a theoretical level together with Jens Kastner and Lea Susemichel (the editors of the volume Unbedingte Solidarität, Unrast Verlag, 2021).
We invite you to move from one table to the next, to be challenged by new questions, to read across stories and encounters, and to re-connect them. Can we think of relationships of solidarity beyond fixed socio-political codes of identity? Hence, is there a “potential of solidarity in learning from difference” (Feminist Studies, 2016)?
The MUSMIG collective is an attempt at migrant self-historicization and calls for a museum of migration in Austria. Since 2019, historians, social scientists, artists, and activists have been working together as an independent collective – organizing exchanges and dialogues on the possibilities, potentials, and concepts of a museum of migration. As part of WIENWOCHE 2023, the first board of directors of MUSMIG was appointed.

Peregrina is an education, counselling, and therapy center founded in 1984 and works today with women from almost 70 countries who have immigrated to Austria voluntarily or out of necessity. The organization supports women in coping with their legal, psychological, and linguistic situation in Austria.

Viena Chilena 73 | 23 was created in 2023 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état in Chile on September 11, 1973. Dedicated to the history of the Chilean diaspora and solidarity movement in Vienna, this project documents the memory of exile and migration via a digital archive and a virtual exhibition to develop collective articulation and empowering self-representation.

Jens Kastner is a sociologist and art historian. His work focuses on social movements, cultural studies, and contemporary art as a freelance author and as a senior lecturer at the Institute for Art and Cultural Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
Lea Susemichel is a journalist, freelance author, and lecturer on the topics of feminist theory & movement, and feminist media politics. She is the managing editor of the feminist magazine an.schläge.
